Columbine Speech

On Thursday, May 27, 1999 Darrell Scott
The Father Of Rachel Scott
A Victim Of The Columbine High School Shootings In Littleton, Colorado
Was Invited To Address The House Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee
What He Said To Our National Leaders
During This Special Session Of Congress Was Painfully Truthful
It Needs To Be Heard By Every Parent
Every Teacher
Every Politician
Every Sociologist
Every Psychologist
And Every So-Called Expert!
These Courageous Words Spoken By Darrell Scott
Are Powerful
Penetrating
And Deeply Personal
There Is No Doubt That God Sent This Man As A Voice Crying In The Wilderness
The Following Is A Portion Of The Transcript

"We all contain the seeds of kindness or the seeds of violence
The death of my wonderful daughter, Rachel, Joy, Scott and the deaths of that heroic teacher
And the other eleven children who died must not be in vain
Their blood cries out for answers
The first recorded act of violence was when Cain slew his brother Abel out in the field
The villain was not the club he used
Neither was it the NCA, the National Club Association
The true killer was Cain
And the reason for the murder could only be found in Cain's heart
In the days that followed the Columbine tragedy
I was amazed at how quickly fingers began to be pointed at groups such as the NRA
I am not a member of the NRA
I am not a member nor do I own a gun
I am not here to represent or defend the NRA
Because I don't believe that they are responsible for my daughter's death
Therefore I do not believe that they need to be defended
If I believed they had anything to do with Rachel's murder
I would be their strongest opponent
I am here today to declare that Columbine was not just a tragedy
It was a spiritual event that should be forcing us to look at where the real blame lies!

Much of the blame lies here in this room
Much of the blame lies behind the pointing fingers of the accusers themselves

I wrote a poem just four nights ago that expresses my feelings best
This was written way before I knew I would be speaking here today
Your laws ignore our deepest needs
Your words are empty air
You've stripped away our heritage
You've outlawed simple prayer
Now gunshots fill our classrooms and precious children die
You seek for answers everywhere
You regulate restrictive laws through legislative creed
Yet you fail to understand that God is what we need!
Men and women are three-part beings
We all consist of body, soul and spirit
When we refuse to acknowledge a third part of our makeup
We create a void that allows evil, prejudice and hatred to rush in and reek havoc
Spiritual influences present within our educational systems for most of our nation's history
Many of our major colleges began as theological seminaries
This is a historical fact

What has happened to us as a nation?
We have refused to honor God

And in doing so, we open the doors to hatred and violence
And when something as terrible as Columbine's tragedy occurs
Politicians immediately look for a scapegoat such as the NRA
They immediately seek to pass more restrictive laws
That contribute to erode away our personal and private liberties
We do not need more restrictive laws
Eric and Dylan would not have been stopped by metal detectors.
No amount of gun laws can stop someone
Who spends months planning this type of massacre
The real villain lies within our own hearts
Political posturing and restrictive legislation are not the answers
The young people of our nation hold the key
There is a spiritual awakening taking place that will not be squelched!
We do not need more religion
We do not need more gaudy television evangelists spewing out verbal religious garbage
We do not need more million dollar church buildings built
While people with basic needs are being ignored
We do need a change of heart and a humble acknowledgment
That this nation was founded on the principle of simple trust in God!
As my son Craig lay under that table in the school library and saw his two friends murdered before his very eyes
He did not hesitate to pray in school
I defy any law or politician to deny him that right!
I challenge every young person in America, and around the world
To realize that on April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School
Prayer was brought back to our schools
Do not let the many prayers offered by thosestudents be in vain.
Dare to move into the new millennium with a sacred disregard for legislation that violates your God given right to communicate with Him
To those of you who would point your finger at the NRA
I give to you a sincere challenge
Dare to examine your own heart before casting the first stone!
My daughter's death will not be in vain!
The young people of this country will not allow that to happen!"

Paul Harvey On Guns
Paul Harvey's Comment On Columbine High School Shootings

How can we blame it all on guns?
For the life of me
I can't understand what could have gone wrong in Littleton, CO.
If only the parents had kept their children away from the guns
We wouldn't have had such a tragedy
Yeah
It must have been the guns!

It couldn't have been because
Half our children are being raised in broken homes

It couldn't have been because
Our children get to spend an average of 30 seconds
In meaningful conversation with their parents each day
After all
We give our children quality time

It couldn't have been because we treat our children as pets
And our pets as children

It couldn't have been because we place our children in day care centers
Where they learn their socialization skills among their peers
Under the law of the jungle
While employees who have no vested interest in the children look on
And make sure that no blood is spilled

It couldn't have been because we allow our children to watch
On the average
Seven hours of television a day
Filled with the glorification of sex and violence
That isn't fit for adult consumption

It couldn't have been because
We allow our children to enter into virtual worlds
In which to win the game
One must kill as many opponents as possible
In the most sadistic way possible

It couldn't have been because
We have sterilized and contracted our families down to sizes so small
That the children we do have are so spoiled with material things
That they come to equate the receiving of the material with love

It couldn't have been because
Our children who historically have been seen as a blessing from God
Are now being viewed as either a mistake created when contraception fails
Or inconveniences that parents try to raise in their spare time

It couldn't have been because
We give two-year prison sentences to teenagers who kill their newborns

It couldn't have been because
Our school systems teach the Children that they are nothing but glorified apes
Who have evolutionized out of some primordial soup of mud
By teaching evolution as fact
And by handing out condoms as if they were candy

It couldn't have been because
We teach our children that there are no laws of morality that transcend us
That everything is relative and that actions don't have consequences

What The Heck, The President Gets Away With It
Nah
It Must Have Been The Guns!

These Things That I Wish For Each Of You
By Paul Harvey

We tried so hard to make things better for our kids that we made them worse

For my grandchildren
I'd like better

I'd really like for them to know about hand-me down clothes
And homemade ice cream and leftover meatloaf sandwiches

I hope you learn humility by being humiliated
And that you learn honesty by being cheated

I hope you learn to make your bed
And mow the lawn
And wash the car

And I really hope nobody gives you a brand new car when you are sixteen

It will be good
If at least one time you can see puppies born and your old dog put to sleep

I hope you get a black eye fighting for something you believe in

I hope you have to share a bedroom with your younger brother
And it's all right if you have to draw a line down the middle of the room
But when he wants to crawl under the covers with you because he's scared
I hope you let him

When you want to see a movie and your little sister wants to tag along
I hope you'll let her

I hope you have to walk uphill to school with your friends
And that you live in a town where you can do it safely

On rainy days when you have to catch a ride
I hope you don't ask your 'driver' to drop you two blocks away
So you won't be seen riding with someone as uncool as your Mom

If you want a slingshot
I hope your Dad teaches you how to make one instead of buying one

I hope you learn to dig in the dirt and read books

When you learn to use computers
I hope you also learn to add and subtract in your head

I hope you get teased by your friends when you have your first crush on a girl

And when you talk back to your mother
That you learn what Ivory soap tastes like

May you skin your knee climbing a mountain
Burn your hand on a stove and stick your tongue on a frozen flagpole

I don't care if you try a beer once
But I hope you don't like it

And if a friend offers you dope or a joint
I hope you realize he is not your friend

I sure hope you make time to sit on a porch with your Grandma
And go fishing with your Uncle

May you feel sorrow at a funeral and joy during the holidays

I hope your Mother punishes you
When you throw a baseball through a neighbor's window
And that she hugs you and kisses you at Christmas time
When you give her a mold of your hand

These things I wish for you
Tough times
Disappointment
Hard work
And happiness

To Me
It's The Only Way To Appreciate Life

Rick's Thoughts

I am a Vietnam Veteran
July '67 to July '68
After all of these years
I still have a lot of turmoil going on inside me
I just can't seem to shake my memories
It is in my thoughts every single day
The memories and fears are still there
I did a job I was trained to do
Somehow being trained to be a killer does not seem right to me
But if I had it to do all over again
I would
I am not a coward
I didnot and wouldnot run from my obligations to my country

Some of the things that I did in Vietnam still bother me
A normal person would not have done some of the things that I did in vietnam
But a normal person who has not been there and done that
Would not understand why I did!!
Sometimes I worry about going to hell for what I did
Will GOD really forgive me?

It bothers me greatly that mankind cannot exist in our lifetime in world peace
We can no longer send children to school without fear of them losing their lifes
Aids is destroying lives
I am an ex drug addict, clean since 1975, so I know what drugs can do

Sometimes I feel that, life as we now know it , is in danger of it's very existence
Everyday the media shows more and more killings of all kinds
Post office shootings, work place shootings and school shootings
What the Hell is wrong with this country?
Our innocent kids and everyday people like you and me are not the enemy
No one deserves to die like that

Sometimes I wish we could go back to the 50's, when life was more simple
No vcrs, no camcorders, no drugs, no sex being advertised everywhere that you looked
Not so many young girls having babies
Babies having babies
An era when families played and stayed togeather
An era when everyone respected each other

Our kids. heritage and culture died the day they took prayer out of our schools
Our kids have a right to live in a safe and secure country
They are, after, all this country's future, our future leaders

But then it is against the law now
For them to pray when someone is trying to kill them while they are in school
Silent prayers are allowed, thank GOD
Is some lunatic going to take their right to silent prayer away from them also
No one has the right to do that
It is a wonder someone has not learned how to control silent prayer

My heart goes out to the kids of Columbine
I have seen death first hand
It is a memory that you have forever
It never goes away from you
None of our kids should be afraid to go to school
Or have to go through what the kids of Columbine did!!
How many more of our children do we have to lose before our leaders wake up?

Hell
Monica and Bill got more publicity and wasted tax dollars spent on them
Than do our school children
I guess Bills sex education class with Monica taught him a good lesson

"Yeah Right"

Some role model he was
And he was our President

To fight for our freedom in Vietnam, made me proud to be an American
But now we are fighting a war in the USA that I am not proud of
I fear for my life and everyone else's

People lose their lives anymore over the dumbest of things
Road rage
Car jackings
And being robbed for drug money
And the news media over glorifies it
Giving more idiots the notion to go and do the same thing
I would not want to live anywhere else but the USA
I value my freedom
But something has to be done now to protect our children's future and their lives
I love my country and GOD

But
It is no wonder that I keep a gun in my house
And trust it more than I do most people

At least I can protect myself from lunatics
And if I had to protect myself or my loved ones
I would

The United Stares Army taught me how to do that
I know that we have to protect other countries
But who is going to stop the war going on in our own country

Does Anyone Care Anymore?

The powers to be that run our country have lost all sense of reality with us
The people

We
"The People" of this country have to unite and become as one
We need to make the decisions that will keep our country and our kids safe
The politicians are not getting the job done
To start with put prayer back in school
Life is to short and soon we are gone from this earth

"God Bless The USA
Love It Or Leave It!!!!
