Halloween Trick Or Treats




Eerie Witch's Brew

4 cups cranberry juice
1 cup chopped candied ginger
3 oranges
12 ounce can frozen apple juice concentrate
6 ounce can frozen limeade concentrate
2 cups grapes
2 32-ounce bottles ginger ale
4 cups water
1 to 2 pounds dry ice


A Serious Caution

Never touch dry ice; use tongs to handle
In a 1 to 2 quart pan, bring 1 cup of cranberry juice and candied ginger to a boil over high heat
Boil, uncovered, about 2 minutes, set aside
With a vegetable peeler, peel zest from oranges; cut peel into thin 2 inch long worms
Add orange peel to cranberry mixture
Cover and chill at least 4 hours or as long as overnight

Juice oranges; put juice in a 6 to 8 quart pan or heavy bowl
Stir in cranberry-ginger mixture, the 3 cups cranberry juice, apple concentrate, limeade, grapes and water
If made ahead, cover and chill up to 2 hours
Add ginger ale and about a 1 pound piece of dry ice
DO NOT put small pieces in punch or cups
Ice should smolder at least 30 minutes
Ladle into cups
Add any remaining ice when bubbling ceases


"Bugs"

12 oz chocolate chips
12 oz butterscotch chips
1 pkg peanuts
1 pkg chow mein noodles

Melt chips in double boiler & pour over noodles and nuts
Mix well and drop by spoonfuls on ungreased cookie sheet
Chill until firm


Cheese Eyeballs

2 cups grated Cheddar
1/2 cup butter
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon paprika
1 cup flour
6 ounce bottle pimento-stuffed green olives


Combine cheese and butter
Add salt, paprika, and flour and mix well
Measure approximately one tps of this mixture and form an "eyeball" around an olive
Turn the olive in the "eyeball" so that it is "staring" outward
Line up the eyeballs on an ungreased cookie sheet
Bake in 400F oven for 15 minutes


Gnarled Witch's Fingers

1 T vegetable oil
4 boneless chicken breasts
1 cup flour
1 egg, beaten
1 cup bread crumbs
Pitted black olives, halved lengthwise
Shredded lettuce


Grease cookie sheet with oil, set aside
Carefully cut chicken breasts part way to create five "fingers"
The uncut part will be the palm of the hand
Slice them a little crooked for effect
Dust in flour, dip in egg, coat in bread crumbs, broil 5 minutes on each side until golden and cooked through
Trim the tips with the olive fingernails and serve on lettuce


"Aquarium Jello"

Goldfish bowl, nice and clean
Red hots or Jelly Belly gravel beans
Blue Jello
Ice cubes
Cold water
Purple endive
Parsley sprigs
Gummy fish


Use a new or well cleaned goldfish bowl
In the bottom, use red-hots as the gravel
Or use Jelly Belly beans that look like rocks
Mix up as much blue Jello as your bowl will hold
Mix using ice cubes & cold water instead of the cold water called for on the box
Pour this into the bowl over a knife blade or something to keep from disturbing the gravel
If you want it to have 'seaweed', poke a couple of pieces of purple endive or something similar down into the gravel
When the whole thing starts to jell, use a wooden skewer to push gummy fish into different parts of the bowl
If you're going to be able to supervise the serving, you could even add a plastic diver man, etc


Ghosts In The GraveYard

From A Cool Whip Recipe

3 1/2 cups cold water
2 packages, 4-serving size, Jell-o Chocolate flavour Instant pudding and pie filling
1 tub (12 oz) Cool Whip Whipped Topping, thawed
1 pkg. (16 oz) chocolate sandwich cookies, crushed

HINT
Crush cookies in zipper-style plastic bag with rolling pin or in food processor

MAKE
Pudding as directed on package using 3 1/2 cups milk; let stand 5 minutes

STIR
In 3 cups of the whipped topping and 1/2 of the crushed cookies

SPOON
Into 13" X 9" dish
Sprinkle with remaining crushed cookies
Refrigerate 1 hour

DECORATE
With candy, pumpkin candies and such
Rectangular sandwich cookies to make tombstones
Decorate tombstones with red candy icing
And spoonfuls of whipped topping for ghosts
Make eyes and mouths on ghosts with Chocolate beads

Halloween Spider Cake

1 box white cake mix
1 pkg. green jello
blue food coloring
chocolate frosting
4 back licorice strips
2 big green gumballs
6 little gumballs


Prepare cake and gelatin according to package directions
Except use the 9" round cake pans for the cake
Cut a smaller circle out of one cake using it as the head
Fill the hole left over with the gelatin
Place the other layer on top and trip to shape
To prepare frosting, in a mixing bowl, add blue food coloring to the chocolate frosting until black in color
Frost cake black
Then use the black licorice as leggs and gumballs as eyes

NOTE
When cake is cut into
It spurts green goop


More Halloween Ideas

You Can Take Some Ordinary Foods
And Relabel Them As Something Creative


1.---Ribs with lots of barbeque sauce
2.---Baked potatoes with chili ladled over for shrunken heads with brain sauce
3.---Spaghetti for your basic guts
A twist on this would be to put brussel sprouts in the sauce instead of meatballs
People won't be able to tell the difference until they bite into them
4.---Fill your candy dishes with Black Jellybeans, Mellowcream pumpkins and candy corn
Drape gummy worms over the sides o the candy dish for effect

1.---Bake brown sugar cookies in pumpkin-shaped stoneware cookie molds (Brown Bag Cookie Molds)
2.---Make sugar cookie cut-outs with pumpkin-shaped cookie cutters and sprinkle with orange decorator sugar

Brains On The Half Shell

2 med potatoes
8 ox thin spaghetti
14 oz spaghetti sauce


Preheat oven to 400
Wash and cut potatoes in half crosswise
Place the potatoes cut side up and bake for 40 minutes
Cook spaghetti sauce and noodles as called for
When potatoes are done
Scoop out the insides
Put a scoop of bloody brains into the potatoe "skulls" and serve


Halloween PopCorn Crunch

Yields 10 cups
8 c Popcorn
1/2 c Salted pumpkin seeds
1/2 c Dried cranberries or raisins
1/2 c Banana chips;broken into pieces
1 1/2 c Sugar
1/2 c Corn syrup
1/4 c Water
1/4 c Butter
1 ts Vanilla


In large buttered bowl, combine first 4 ingredients; set aside
In medium saucepan combine sugar, corn syrup and water; bring to a boil
Cook, covered 3 minutes
Uncover and cook, without stirring, until mixture reaches hard-ball stage (260 F), 4 - 5 minutes
Add butter and vanilla; cook, stirring 1 minute
Pour over popcorn mixture; toss quickly to coat
Turn mixture out onto greased baking sheet and spread using buttered hands
Cool and break into pieces


Double Delicious Halloween Bars

1/2 Cup margarine or butter
1 1/2 Cups graham cracker crumbs
1 (14 Oz.) Can sweetened condensed milk
1 (12 Oz.) Pac milk chocolate chips
1 Cup peanut butter chips


Preparation

Preheat oven to 350 degrees, 325 degrees for a glass dish
In 13 x 9 inch baking pan, melt margarine in oven
Sprinkle crumbs evenly over margarine
Pour sweetened condensed milk evenly over crumbs
Top with chips; press down firmly
Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until lightly browned
Cool and cut into bars


Critters In The Hay

Yield: 4 quarts
1 1/2 c Sugar
1 c Light corn syrup
2 tb Butter
1 1/2 ts Pumpkin pie spice
1 ts Vanilla
1/2 ts Sal.
1/2 ts Green food color, optional
3 1/2 qt Popped popcorn; remove any unpopped kernals
1 cup Candy corn
Licorice ropes; black
Wooden picks
Small black gum drops or other small black candies
Red decorating icing
Tiny red jaw-breakers candy
Wormshape candies


In Dutch oven, bring sugar,corn syrup and butter to a boil; boil 2 1/2 minutes
Stir in pumpkin pie spice, vanilla, salt and food coloring(if desired) mix until evenly colored
Add popcorn and toss until evenly coated
Spread popcorn mixture in a single layer on greased sheets of foil
Allow to cool and harden
Break into bite-size pieces and mix with candy corn in a wide shallow bowl; set aside
To make spiders, cut licorice into 2 inch lengths
To make legs, starting at one end, make three 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch cuts to make four legs
Repeat cuts at opposite end
Leave about 1/2 inch in center uncut
Gently pull legs apart and curl down
Push wooden pick through center of body, leaving about 1/4 inch exposed on top
Push one gumdrop onto exposed pick to make a body
Using writing tip of decorating icing, squeeze two small dots of icing into gumbrops
Press jaw-breakers into icing to make eyes
Place"spiders" and worm-shaped candies in popcorn
Remove wooden picks before eating
Makes 4 quarts


Bloody Bug Juice

Preparation Method
24 oz Frozen strawberries--thawed
6 oz Lemonade, frozen concentrate
1 qt Ginger ale
1 cup Raisins
1 cup Blueberries--fresh or frozen


Place the strawberries in a bowl and mash with a fork
In a large pitcher, mix the strawberry mash, lemonade and ginger ale
Place handfuls of raisins and blueberries (bugs) into tall glasses
Pour the liquid over the bugs
Then sit back and watch the bugs and scum rise to the top of each glass
To quench a creepy crowd's thirst, double or triple this recipe and serve in a punch bowl
Drape some gummy worms over the rim of your bowl for a particularly swampy-looking effect!

"Ghoul-Ade"

1 Envelope Kool-Aid grape flavor unsweetened mix
1 Envelope Kool-Aid orange flavor unsweetened mix
2 Cups sugar
3 Quarts cold water
1 Bottle (qt.) ginger ale--chilled
Preparation
Mix Kool Aid's together with sugar, in large pitcher
Add water and mix
Just before serving, add ginger ale



Magic Center CupCakes

Preheat oven to temperature called for on 1-18 1/4 ounce package chocolate cake mix
In a small bowl, combine 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 egg and a dash of salt
Stir in 1/2 cup finely chopped walnuts and 1-6 ounce package chocolate chips
Set aside
Mix cake according to directions on the package
Place paper liners in muffin pan
Fill each liner half full of cake batter
Drop a heaping teaspoons of the cream cheese mixture into each batter-filled cup
Bake according to package directions
Let cupcakes cool to room temperature before frosting
Decorate with candy spiders or worms


Dead GrassHoppers

In a medium saucepan melt 1-6 ounce package butterscotch chips over low heat, stirring constantly
To microwave, place pieces in a microwave safe dish and cook on medium-low heat for about 1 minute
Stir well
If necessary, continue to heat chips, 20 seconds at a time, until they are melted
Be sure to stir chips each time you heat them
Remove chips from the heat
Stir in 1 cup salted peanuts and 3 cups chow mein noodles
Drop by teaspoons onto waxed paper and cool
Makes 30-40 grasshoppers


Dirt

Put chocolate pudding in clear plastic containers and imbed a gummy worm or two
Cover the top of the pudding with crushed chocolate cookie crumbs
It looks good if a worm is peeking out of the dirt


Witches Brew

This makes a nice foaming drink
In a clear punch bowl mix equal parts blue kool-aid and lemon-lime pop
Add some crushed dry ice
Continue to add more every half hour or so

Warning

Don't let kids serve themselves.
Because dry ice can cause lips and tongue to freeze
Scoop it out yourself and leave the dry ice in the bottom


Bloody PopCorn

Add some red food coloring to the butter while melting it and pour over the popcorn


Swamp Slime

Make green jello
Put some of it in clear plastic containersand put some aside
When the jello starts to solidify, add various gummy bugs
Beat the rest of the jello to a froth and add to the top of the slime
Let jello set


Cheese Fingers

Preheat oven to 400 degrees
Remove crusts from 3 slices of white bread and discard crusts
With your hands, break bread into small pieces and drop into a medium bowl
Add 3/4 cup grated cheddar cheese, 3 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese and 3 tablespoons milk
Mix well with hands, kneading the bread into the cheese, until dough will hold the shape of a ball
Roll heaping teaspoonfuls of mixture into 15 fingers and arrange on an ungreased cookie sheet
Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until fingers begin to turn brown


Caterpillar SandWhich

Preheat oven to 375 degrees
In a small bowl combine 1/4 cup mayonnaise
2 teaspoons parsley
2 teaspoons dry mustard
And 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
Stir well and set aside
Cut 1 loaf italian bread into 10 slices without cutting all the way through the loaf
Spread mayonnaise mixture between every other slice
Fold luncheon meat in half and tuck a slice of cheese in between
Insert folded meat and cheese into every other slot that has the mayonnaise mixture in it
Wrap the loaf in foil and bake for 25 minutes
Use thin sliced celery stalks for antenna
Use olive slices with pimento in center on toothpicks for caterpillar eyes
To serve, cut the loaf in slices at the cuts you didn't fill


Give Me A Hand!

Disposable plastic gloves for serving food, clear
Carmel Corn or Popcorn
Candy Corn
Spider Rings
Black and Orange Ribbon


Place one candy corn in bottom finger and thumb section of glove to resemble a finger nail
Fill glove with caramel corn or popcorn
Tie closed with ribbon
Place spider ring on one finger of filled glove
You might need to cut the ring in back so it will fit on the finger


Ghost Cookie

You will need
Peanut Shaped Cookies
White Frosting, or Marshmallow Fluff
Chocolate Chips


Using peanut shaped cookies spread with white frosting or marshmallow fluff
Add chocolate chips for eyes and nose


Halloween Pumpkin-Shaped Cake

2 times the batter for any cake recipe
Or 2 boxes cake mix, prepared
2 times any white frosting recipe
Or 2 cans white frosting
Food coloring
1 Hostess Ho-Ho


Prepare two cakes in bunt pans and cool completely
Color most of the frosting a deep orange, reserving about 1/2 cup which should be colored black
You might use dark chocolate frosting

Place one bundt cake upside down, rounded side on the bottom, on a cake plate
Frost the top only
Place the second bunt cake flat side down on top of first cake
Frost the entire cake with orange frosting making up and down motions with spatula to simulate a pumpkin

Insert the Ho-Ho in the middle of the top of the bunt cake to make the stem
Use black frosting to make eyes, nose, mouth, etc
Black licorice may also be used
